Do you work with all genres?

Brainstorming and Book Coaching Services: I specialize in romance and fantasy for these services. Because brainstorming and coaching involve story-level guidance—plot structure, character development, genre-specific beats, and market positioning—I work best with manuscripts in the genres I know intimately as both a writer and reader.

Copy Editing, Proofreading, and Formatting Services: Yes! While I specialize in romance and fantasy as a published author in these genres, my copy editing, proofreading, and formatting services work for literary fiction, mystery, sci-fi, non-fiction, and beyond. Since I focus on technical elements like grammar, spelling, and professional layout rather than story content, I can help polish any manuscript.

What is included with brainstorming services?

Brainstorming sessions include a one-hour collaborative video call where we explore your story ideas together. No prep work is required—just bring your concept (whether it’s a seed of an idea or fully formed) and we’ll dive into plot development, character creation, world-building, or any aspect of your story you want to develop. The session is flexible and follows your creative energy. You can request a recording of our call to revisit later, and I also offer optional session notes as an add-on. For full details, visit my Services page.

What is included with book coaching services?

Book coaching sessions include a one-hour video call with personalized feedback on your manuscript. Before our session, I’ll review your work-in-progress (up to 10,000 words or 3 chapters) and come prepared with specific suggestions on plot, character development, pacing, structure, dialogue, or whatever areas you’re focusing on. After our call, you’ll receive written notes summarizing our discussion and actionable next steps. You can also request a recording of the session. For full details, visit my Services page.

What is included with copy editing services?

If you send me a Word or Google Doc, I will review your manuscript for clarity, flow, and style improvements including sentence structure, word choice, grammar, punctuation, and dialogue enhancement.

I will also check for consistency in character names, timeline, tone, and writing style throughout your manuscript.

I will provide a custom style sheet documenting editing decisions made during the process.

For full details, visit my Services page.

What is included with the proofreading services?

If you send me a Word or Google Doc, I will do a final proofread looking for errors in spelling, grammar, punctuation, and story continuity.

If you send a formatted PDF, I will also look for formatting errors including headers, footers, front matter, and back matter.

I will also highlight what’s working well and potential pull quotes for promotional purposes (optional).

For full details, visit my Services page.

Can I request revisions to copy editing or proofreading changes?

Copy editing and proofreading changes are delivered as suggestions using track changes, which means you have full control to accept or reject each edit. You’re not required to accept any changes you disagree with. I am happy to discuss any changes if you want clarity to understand why I suggested them.

Can I request revisions to formatting?

Two rounds of revisions are included. If you have questions about specific formatting decisions or want clarification, I’m happy to discuss them. Additional rounds of revision may be available (additional fees may apply).

If you want a recording of the call, request prior to the call start and I’ll send it as soon as the call wraps.

Please contact me to discuss your timeline and confirm availability before placing a rush order.

What’s the difference between brainstorming and book coaching?

Brainstorming is for developing new story ideas or working through creative challenges. It’s a collaborative, exploratory session where we talk through plot concepts, character development, world-building, or any aspect of your story you want to explore. No prep work is required—just bring your ideas and we’ll work through them together in real-time. It’s perfect for early-stage projects or when you’re feeling stuck and need fresh perspectives.

Book Coaching is for manuscripts already in progress. I’ll review your work (up to 10,000 words or 3 chapters) before our session and provide targeted, personalized feedback on plot structure, character arcs, pacing, dialogue, or specific problem areas. You’ll receive written notes after our call with actionable next steps. It’s ideal for authors who have a draft and need guidance on strengthening specific elements of their story.

In short: Brainstorming is exploratory and spontaneous. Coaching is focused and manuscript-specific.

What’s the difference between proofreading and copy editing?

Proofreading is the final polish – catching spelling, grammar, punctuation, and formatting errors in a finished manuscript. Copy editing goes deeper, focusing on style, clarity, sentence structure, and flow to improve how your writing reads. Think of copy editing as refining your voice and proofreading as catching the technical details.

For a detailed breakdown of these services and when you need each one, check out my blog post: Developmental Editing vs. Copy Editing vs. Proofreading: What Authors Need to Know

Can you work with manuscripts that haven’t been professionally edited?

Absolutely! I understand that authors have different budgets and may not be able to invest in every level of editing. Authors can successfully use beta readers and critique partners to address developmental and structural issues before moving to professional proofreading.

However, if I receive a manuscript that would benefit from developmental or copy editing first, I’ll let you know honestly. Proofreading works best on manuscripts that are already well-structured and clearly written – trying to proofread a manuscript that needs deeper editing can actually waste your money and won’t give you the results you’re hoping for. In this situation, I can either refund your deposit or postpone the project start date while you work with beta readers or other editors whatever works best for you.

My goal is to help you spend your editing budget wisely and get the best possible outcome for your book. If I feel your manuscript isn’t quite ready for proofreading, I’ll explain why and can recommend next steps that fit your budget.

What is a style guide and why do I need one?

A style guide is a set of rules that ensures consistency throughout your manuscript – things like whether you use “okay” or “OK,” how you format dialogue, number usage, and punctuation preferences. It’s like a personalized rulebook for your writing choices.

You need one because consistency makes your book look professional and polished. Without a style guide, you might use “towards” on page 10 and “toward” on page 50, or format thoughts differently throughout your book. Readers notice these inconsistencies, even if they can’t pinpoint why something feels off.

When you choose my formatting services, I automatically compile a style guide documenting all the formatting choices we make for your book. For proofreading projects, I can create a custom style guide for an additional fee to ensure consistency across your current and future manuscripts.

What will I receive back?

Brainstorming Services: You’ll leave the session with fresh ideas and new perspectives on your story. If requested in advance, you can receive a recording of our call to revisit our conversation and capture all the ideas we discussed. You can also add written session notes as an optional add-on.

Book Coaching Services: You’ll receive written notes summarizing our discussion, key feedback points, and actionable next steps to strengthen your manuscript. If requested in advance, you can also receive a recording of our call to review the feedback at your own pace.

Copy Editing Services: You’ll receive your manuscript back in the same format you provided with comprehensive track changes showing all edits and detailed comments explaining suggested improvements. You’ll also receive a custom style sheet documenting the editing decisions made and a clean final version with all changes accepted.

Formatting Services: You’ll receive a print-ready PDF file for paperback publishing (and hardcover if requested) plus a professional ePub file for ebook platforms. Both files will be formatted to industry standards and ready for upload to your chosen publishing platforms.

Proofreading Services: You’ll receive your manuscript back in the same format you provided – a Word document with track changes, a Google Doc with suggestions, or a PDF with markup comments. All corrections and suggestions will be clearly marked for your review.

If you choose multiple services, you’ll receive all the files mentioned above.

What if I miss the deadline for getting the draft to you or I need more time?

Life happens, and I understand that writing deadlines can shift! If you need to adjust your submission date or require more time, just let me know as soon as possible. We can discuss modifying the schedule to work for both of us.

Keep in mind that any changes will depend on my current workload and other client commitments. The earlier you let me know about timeline changes, the more flexibility I’ll have to accommodate your new schedule. My goal is to work with you while ensuring all my clients receive the quality and attention they deserve.

What if you hate my book?

Personal taste and professional quality are completely different things. Just because I might not be a fan of literary fiction doesn’t mean I can’t recognize excellent writing, compelling characters, and a well-crafted story.

For my editing services (copy editing, proofreading, and formatting), my job is to focus on technical elements – grammar, spelling, punctuation, and formatting – not to judge your story. I approach every manuscript with the same professional standards, regardless of whether it’s my personal reading preference.

For brainstorming and coaching services, I’m here to help you strengthen your story, not judge it. My role is to provide constructive feedback, help you solve story problems, and guide you toward solutions that serve your vision. Whether you’re at the idea stage or working through a challenging draft, I approach every project with the goal of helping you tell the best version of your story.

The only time I would express concerns about a manuscript is if I believe it needs developmental or copy editing before proofreading (as mentioned in another FAQ). This isn’t about the story being “bad” – it’s about ensuring you get the best value from your proofreading investment.

Remember, every book has its audience. My personal taste doesn’t determine whether your book will resonate with your readers – and that’s exactly as it should be!
